     Alfred Viles was born on 3 Apr 1797 in Orland, Hancock County, Maine.3,4,5,6 He married Thankful Norton, daughter of Abner Norton and Hannah Claghorn, on 2 Oct 1817 in Maine.7,6,8,2 He was a member of the Free-will Baptist Church.5 He was a farmer on 30 Aug 1850 in Starks, Somerset County, Maine.6 He and Thankful Norton lived in Walworth County, Wisconsin, in 1851.5 On 8 Mar 1851, Alfred Viles received 80 acres from his son Jotham and daughter-in-law Mary, assuming the $250 mortgage to Henderson Hunt that the couple had apparently taken out just two months before.9 According to land records of Walworth County, Wisconsin, he purchased 40 acres from Henry and Emeline Barlow of Delavan for $200. The deed was witnessed by Peter M. Keeler and S.S. Barlow.10 According to land records of Walworth County, Wisconsin, he purchased land from Chauncey and Sarah Parsons for $564. The Deed was witnessed by Levi Floyd(?) and J. Andrew Stevens.11
On 1 Apr 1853, Alfred Viles sold 80 acres of land to Benjamin Warren Viles for $500. Jotham S. Viles and John A. Perry were witnesses to the deed.12 According to land records of Walworth County, Wisconsin, he purchased 240 acres in Richmond from John Taylor. H.F. Smith and John A. Perry were witnesses to the deed.13 He was listed as a former owner of Walworth County land sold by Benjamin Warren Viles and Emily (—?—) to Levi Sawyer in a deed dated 5 Dec 1853.14 According to land records purchased Lots 6, 7, and 8 in Block 21 of Village of Elkhorn from "Loren Sexton and Mary his wife, John Wing Jr and Susan his wife and Lester Sexton and Emma his wife of Milwaukee City." Alfred was "of Elkhorn."15 He was head of household on the 1855 census of in Walworth County, Wisconsin with 2 males and 1 female, most likely Alfred, Thankful, and their grandson Eugene Gardner..16 Alfred was widowed by Thankful's death on 8 Jun 1868 in Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin.17 Alfred died in at the home of his son-in-law Levi Sawyer, Esq., Walworth, Walworth County, Wisconsin, on 6 Aug 1881 at 84.17,18,7,19 He was buried in Millard Cemetery, Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin.17,7 A petition for the grant of probate for Alfred Viles's will was filed by S. Rus La Bar on 9 Aug 1881 in Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Goods and personal estate were estimated at $8,000, debts at $50.19 His estate was probated on 6 Sep 1881 in Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin.20
